Hello everyone from the Outer Banks where we received 4 - 8 inches of snow last night. All this unusually cold weather has hindered our work in the boatyard. 11 yr old angler Ashton Burton of South Boston VA sent us a picture of the sailfish mount hanging on his wall. Nice trophy! Let's catch that blue marlin next year.
Happy to have some good friends from Tappahannock VA aboard Point Runner today. Lewis Greenwood, Charles Greenwood, Justin Bullis, Kyle Bullis, Dick Bates, and Eddie Webb. Look at what they caught for the grill! A good size blackfin tuna and 4 tasty wahoo's. One weighed 43 pounds worthy of an NC state citation. Thanks guys for bringing some Northern Neck ginger ale.
Although good water is moving into position where we usually have our best Fall tuna fishing, there were not very many tuna bites the past two days. Monday, most every boat in the fleet had some wahoo bites around the Point. We had 8 bites putting 2 hoos in the box plus a couple of blackfin for Buck Morgan, Guy Gilmore, and CB Morgan from Radford VA. The season is not over yet. This place could come alive with tuna any day now.
The good news is some tuna were found today. Trophy Hunter followed a weedline out into the deep looking for mahi when they came upon a flock of birds circling over a school of tuna. Kenneth made a couple of good passes and loaded the rods with yellowfin calling the fleet into the area. The first few boats to arrive also made good catches. We found some birds but the marks had gone deep. Hopefully these fish will move closer. We had 5 yellowfin bites landing 3....to go along with a few blackfin, mahi and a sailfish we had caught earlier. Thanks to the South Jersey boys for fishing with us today. We were happy to return to the blue water today. Our target species, tuna, eluded us , although we were pleased to catch a limit of tiles, and mahi. Take a look at this beautiful little sailfish....the perfect mount for any home. Of course it was released to grow bigger and be caught another day. It was a little tricky getting across the shoal near the bridge this morning, but we made it out for the first time in several days. The sea had finally settled down enough for charters to fish. Our crew included Jim Brooks Sr, Alicia, Kyle, Cy, and Sue. We landed a good catch of tilefish, blackfin tuna, and a couple of yellowfin. We are still expecting better tuna fishing during the next few weeks.
Today we had Lewis Martin, Van Adams and crew who were originally booked aboard Outrigger with Capt Aaron. He is in the process of having new engines installed and asked us to take the trip. Thanks Aaron, glad to help out and good luck with the repower. There were some good catches of mahi for boats who found some float or landed in the right place along the gulf stream grass line. We wanted tuna so did not spend much time along the grass. Ended up with some mahi, a few yellowfin,& blackfin. The sea was pleasantly calm with plenty of porpoises and pilot whales around.
Susan, Hanky, Will, Brian, and Justin enjoyed a beautiful calm day on the ocean with Scotty and Capt Danny. The gulf stream change was down at the 400 line at 100fm this morning. We landed a couple of yellowfin, tiny blackfin, and half a limit of mahi during the morning. Spent the last part of the trip circling pilot whales around the 630 line with no more tuna bites. There was a heavy thermocline indicating the ocean was still unsettled from the recent rough weather. Hoping the stream will move inshore overnight. OH YES, we are still at Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo because of the Gubment shutdown.
Welcome back to Eddie Sublett, Jim, Alfred, Mark, Jason and Matt from Moneta VA. It was our first day out after 4 days of rough seas. Glad we found some tuna for the guys. Our best action was below the Point early in the day. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is located on National Park property. Today at 6pm OIFC was shut down until the a**holes in Washington get things figured out. If you have a trip in the next few days, we may be docked at Pirates Cove in Manteo.
Chris, Fran, Dave and Doug from NJ were able to get in a fishing trip before NE 25 winds rough up the ocean during a weekend blow. Glad you guys were able to go today. Enjoy the fresh tuna and congrats to Fran on landing the sailfish.
Another good day of fishing out of Oregon Inlet. Boats holding NE targeted white marlin. Boats heading SE targeted tuna. It was a banner day for the tuna fleet...most had limits. The marlin fleet saw plenty of fish too. Although, not every boat landed all the fish they encountered. We capitalized on only a fourth of what we could have. Still, I think Chris and Brenda Burton, Chris and Brittany enjoyed all the action. Plus look at these two wahoo, two mahi, and a tiny blackfin tuna in the mix.
Things came together today. We found a good grass-line with plenty of mahi near the Point. Landed a limit of 60, then went on to box 6 yellowfin tuna for Mike Grimes, Matt Holcombe, Wayne Holt, Jack Boyer, Cory Holcombe, and Mark John Keen. Thanks for checking in.
Dudley Swartz and daughter Morgan of PA returned for another fishing adventure aboard Point Runner today. They landed 7 white marlin and a sailfish. 13-year old Morgan landed the sail and 4 whites herself. You go girl!
More friends from the Northern Neck of VA chartered Point Runner today. Glad we caught a few yellowfin tuna for Keith Herbert, Tinker Fornash, Chris Mayhugh, Ford Becker, Ricky Clark, and Jamie Clark. Tinker also landed a sailfish. Guys, thanks for bringing some Northern Neck ginger ale. And tell Barry Sanders the tenderloin was delicious.
We went down to the Point today with our return customers from Ohio....Ron Wright, Gerry Lutz, Vince Pezzot, Bill Wilkinson, Brittney Wilkinson, and Kayla Cain. The ocean was smooth and lively. They saw porpoises, sharks, turtles, whales, plus caught some yellowfin & blackfin tuna along with a couple of feisty sailfish. Hope to see you guys on your next Outer Banks vacation.
Look at all this meat heading up the road to Gloucester VA with Paul Lemon, 9 yr old Sawyer Lemon, James Hofmann, Rick Hohneke, Steve Call, and Lance Hunter. A mix of blackfin and yellowfin tuna, a wahoo, and couple of mahi. It was a beautiful calm day offshore. Thanks Paul for the NN gingerale and good food. Did you make the crab cakes?
Congratulations to Scotty and Amanda Simpson on their wedding 8/31/13. Beautiful ceremony, fantastic reception, great couple! We look forward to having Scotty back aboard Point Runner after the honeymoon.
9/1/13 This party from VA remembered to bring Capt Danny some Northern Neck Ginger Ale. Good thing, because he was down to his last can. They made a good haul of meat-fish to take home to Tappahannock....including delicious blackfin tuna, a wahoo, and a mahi. Wish we could have landed the huge wahoo that got away, and the blue marlin we raised. Thanks to Carter and Rachel Ball, Joey Fore, Nathan Holston, Brian Neely, and Tyler Gill for spending the day on the ocean with us.
Although white marlin action was slower today, we caught six....one each for Bob, Darius, Jimmy, Kyle, Michael, and Rob. Plus a 55 pound wahoo for the dinner table.
The big sea that kept us from fishing the past couple of days settled down in time for this Richmond/Northern Neck family to enjoy a pleasant day on the ocean. John and Libby Lewis with sons Porter, Warner, and friend Emily saw white marlin balling bait, caught 3 for 7 whites, caught some mahi, saw pilot whales and hammerhead sharks. What a great day for first timers out of Oregon Inlet. Marlin fishing was excellent with some boats fishing a little late and bringing home a rigger full of flags.
We took the last couple of days off due to rough sea conditions. Today we participated in really good marlin fishing. If we had been luckier, perhaps we could have doubled our catch. We saw a dozen or more fish and only captured 6 for the day. A couple of boats had twice that many. Still happy all our guys from Midlothian VA will receive a white marlin release citation. Bob Kozura and the FIVE GUYS crew caught a few tuna and a nice wahoo today. Rougher than we expected but the guys handled the seas well. Enjoy the meat guys, Look forward to next time.
