It was a pleasure having Ward and Tabitha Burton of South Boston, VA along with their 11-yr old son Ashton aboard Point Runner today. The goal was to catch something for dinner, and a billfish suitable for a mount. Young Ashton did a nice job keeping the line tight on a sailfish and a blue marlin. We also found a small school of mahi and landed a few for the table. We let Ward drive the boat for a while but for some reason he kept going in circles. Love it when a plan comes together.
Had a nice crew from Essex VA aboard Point Runner. Hey guys, thanks for bringing the captain a 12-pack of Northern Neck Ginger Ale (Diet). He loves the stuff. Corbin, Ryan, Courtney, Lindsay, Winston, and Hunter landed some yellowfin and blackfin tuna along with a few mahi. Beautiful calm day was enjoyed by all.
This is the largest yellowfin tuna we have ever landed aboard Point Runner. 96-pounder reeled boat-side by Augustin Roman. Nice job today by all our anglers....Shelia Lockley, John Votano, John Cornell, Matt Cornell, and Bobby Critcher. Our nine tuna weighted almost 500 pounds. Scotty Simpson was at the helm with Greg Erwin working the pit. Our party included Virginia friends Stephen Ellis, Brody & Logan, Jeff and Robbie, and Avery. They came in with flags flying for a blue marlin and two sailfish. Plus many meals to be enjoyed from this fat yellowfin tuna and three wahoos. Pretty good way to finish out July on the Outer Banks.
The past couple of days Scotty has been in command of Point Runner while Danny takes a few days off. Finding tuna is a struggle right now but Scotty is getting the job done. 7 fat yellowfin tuna today for a group from the Northern Neck of VA. Ford Becker, Chris Mayhugh, Kelly Morris, Robert Morris, Chris Myers, and Mike McCormick. Thanks guys, hope you left some Northern Neck Ginger Ale on the boat.
July fishing can be a challenge, especially if no dolphin fish are around. A big eye tuna is a real day-maker if you're lucky enough to get one. A few were landed today. We didn't get a bigeye bite but we did catch a half dozen yellowfin and a wahoo. Thanks to these guys for returning to fish with us again. Walter Gillions, Cord Gillions, Wilber Flores, Roger Clevinger, and Zack Clevinger. Hey Walter, maybe we will get that white marlin next trip.
Any day you catch a blue marlin is a great day of fishing. Gill Minter, Lee Minter, Philip Cook, Mike Massino, Nicholas Mills, and Clay Lewis had and enjoyable day at sea. We landed south of the Point hoping to find some dolphinfish, but there were non to be had. The best fishing was north of the Point where a few bigeye tuna were caught and some yellowfin, We hooked a bigeye but lost it. Did land a couple of yellowfin and a few mahi for the table. The highlite of the day was a 60 minute battle with a nice blue marlin which was released.
I'd say this is a pretty good catch of yellowfin for July. Nice job reeling 'em in by Mike Joyner, Lisa, Ryan, Jacob, Clayton, and Mike. These folks from the Baltimore area are vacationing on the Outer Banks this week. They will not be lacking for fresh tuna to enjoy.
Thanks to Greg Erwin for filling in for me the past few days. He and Scotty make a good team. Today I was looking forward to our annual overnighter with Lou Jennings and friends. We left at noon looking for a late day bite. Around 3:30 we hooked a nice bigeye and Owen did a great job bringing the 175 pounder to the gaff. Later, Lou caught a 60 pound yellowfin. It was very rough so we decided to get back to the dock before sunset.
Welcome back to the Austin party. Steve & Ruth Austin, William Austin, and Jason Farmer are taking home some fresh tuna to Smithfield, VA. Even though the bite slowed down a little, nice catches were still made. We had three tuna eaten by sharks before we could get them in. A few boats found schools of dolphinfish an caught a limit. Also heard of 3 blue marlin being caught. It was a calm and pretty day to be out there.
We earned this catch today. Yes it was choppy. Yes it rained on us. And yes the fish were biting. These guys from VA were willing to deal with it. Glenn Plomchok, Scott Browder, Shannon Kincaid, Mike Olson, Lee Thacker and Paul Kuppick had enough meat to share and saw nice blue marlin greyhounding across the ocean as we reeled it boatside for release. It was too rough for me to get a picture. Maybe one of the guys in the party did.
Don't know how long this will last, but today we landed another limit of yellowfin tuna. We did have to cull thru some smaller ones before we filled the box. The Ruleman's have plenty of fresh meat to enjoy during their Kitty Hawk beach vacation and more to take home to Weyers Cave VA. William Wayne Wine, Bill, Tom, Art, James, and Brian of Texas an VA will have plenty of meat for their OBX vacation and some to take home too. We culled through a lot of tuna just under the 27-inch mark to come up with this nice catch. Thanks guys, hope you will fish aboard Point Runner again.
Bill Maloney, Jason Maloney, Joe Cummings, and Cailein Campbell experienced pretty good fishing on a calm day at sea. Look at this big 42 pound gaffer dolphin, the largest we have caught this season. We culled through several small tuna to come up with several nice yellowfin. We spent the last two hours of the day trying for a blue marlin. Thanks guys, for your service to our country. This was the second day aboard Point Runner for Darryl Rodenberg. This time Ellie, Sam, Justin, and Nathan came along. It was like sea world out there. They saw plenty of whales, porpoises, and baitfish, but the tuna bite started slowly. Luckily we caught 4 nice yellowfin and a few mahi. We spent the afternoon trolling for a blue marlin. One crashed our teaser but never took a bait.
Calm seas on a beautiful ocean was a nice way for the boat crews and parties to celebrate the 4th. Capt David Swain gave a nice prayer, followed by Capt Paul Lester singing the National Anthem. Fishing started out slow this morning but mid-day some tuna were located and the "stick" did the trick. Wade, Watson, Sam, Nate, Jerry and Darryl really enjoyed getting involved in the action. These young guys are very promising future fishermen.
Yesterday our group caught a blue marlin! Today it will be fresh sushi and tuna bites served at the vacation beach house for these guys and their families. They dealt with choppy seas while landing this great catch of tuna and mahi before calling it an early day.

Plus the winds and ocean had changed around. There was a flurry of bites down below the Point that did not last very long. Glad we made a nice catch for these guys, and the sailfish was a great way to cap off the day."
