May 21 - Great Gaffer Dolphin Fishing posted by rich

We chartered the Chaser on Monday. Spectacular day. Non-stop action on beautiful gaffer dolphin for 3+ hours to start the morning. We caught them up to 25 lbs. on the troll and even bailed some of these gaffer-size dolphin on light tackle a couple of times. It slowed down when the current edge we were fishing faded, but we had occasional bites the rest of the day, including a fiesty sailfish that bit several lines but wouldn't stick to any of them. Ended up with 46 nice dolphin weighing in at nearly 500 pounds. Dolphin has got to be the greatest fish out there - hard fighting, spectacular coloration, lots of jumps, not too tricky to catch (most days), and great eating.

Two of the best days of fishing I've ever seen have been aboard the Chaser out of Odens Dock in Hatteras - Monday's 46 big dolphins, and a late '90s chunking trip with 52 bluefin tuna from 100 - 200 lbs. (all released except for the first one). The Chaser really raises the fish, and Capt. Steve is one of the hardest working fishermen out there. A nice arrangement at the marina with charter boats, hotel, restaurant (they'll cook your fillets for you, and it's great), and fish cleaning all right there at your doorstep.

Thanks Capt. Steve!!! Great trip as always.
